Known to most locals simply as “the Heath,” Hampstead Heath is a large, green public space that sits proudly atop one of London’s highest points and lies mainly within the London Borough of Camden. Apart from all its open space, Hampstead Heath also features more than 20 ponds, several public swimming pools with adjoining facilities, a handful of playgrounds, and even a training track, providing facilities for over sixteen sports and a range of other outdoor activities. Parliament Hill and its surrounding fields occupy the heath’s south-east area and are considered by many to be its main attraction. The hill itself is known for providing an excellent view of London and its skyline, and its highest point is popular among kite flyers. Hampstead Heath is conveniently accessible via numerous transport links comprising several bus routes serving the surrounding roads, the Hampstead Heath and Gospel Oak railway stations, and the Hampstead, Golders Green, and Belsize Park tube stations.

What are the different ways to dispose of waste in Hampstead Heath?

As Hampstead Heath finds itself somewhat far removed from any rubbish tips, council or otherwise, there are certain limitations to its options when it comes to waste disposal. While regular collections offered as part of the borough council’s public services are still the most common means of domestic waste management, those who need to dispose of larger volumes of rubbish or recycling will need to either make the trip to the civic amenity site on Hornsey Street in Islington or seek the services of one of the licenced waste management companies operating in the area. Such options, however, do tend to come with certain advantages, and many find that making arrangements with private contractors for bin collections, skip bag hire, or man & van is well worth the additional cost.

Where are the nearest recycling centres in Hampstead Heath

While the site is located some distance away from most addresses in Hampstead Heath, the reuse and recycling centre (RRC) on Hornsey Street in Islington is by far the nearest of all such facilities in the region. Since they do generally accept more types of domestic waste than other RRCs they are a great option for those wishing to dispose of multiple types of waste. However, residents should also keep in mind that, while most types of rubbish can be brought to the site, there are some materials that cannot be accepted at the pedestrian drop-off point, including gas bottles, commercial batteries, and soil or rubble. And as is the case with most other RRCs administered by the North London Waste Authority, trade waste is not accepted and will need to be brought to one of the licenced facilities in Barnet, Enfield, or Haringey.
