Formerly an influential and wealthy priory established by priests along the banks of the River Thames, the historical area of Blackfriars derived its name from the long black mantles worn by the priests over their white robes. It is now a small district situated within the London Borough of Southwark that has undergone several architectural changes over the years, from a theater during the 15th century, to a fashionable residential district and bridge during the 17th century to the area surrounding the station that it is today. Blackfriars Station serves as a bridgehead for Blackfriars Bridge and Blackfriars Railway Bridge and has been used as a shooting location for several films due to views overlooking the river from along the station concourse. Blackfriars is also home to several notable structures such as the Unilever House Art Deco building, and the Black Friar Pub which is an example of Art Nouveau architecture. Blackfriars is just 3 minutes away from the city centre via Queen Victoria Street.
