Originally a low marshy area occasionally overflowed by the River Thames, Nine Elms is now a rapidly-developing district governed by Wandsworth council. Named after a row of elm trees bordering the road, Nine Elms encompasses a total of 195 hectares of land between Vauxhall and Battersea. It’s just walking distance from several attractions such as the Tate Britain and situated close to the Palace of Westminster. This mixed-development riverside area is set to be regenerated as a prime residential and commercial centre, which could potentially increase its cumulative waste generation. Nine Elms is also home to the newly developed US embassy and will also house contemporary apartment complexes. Residents also enjoy several chic riverside restaurants, bars, cafes and pop-up shops along Nine Elms and Arches Lane, which is just 16 minutes away from the city and is serviced by nearby Vauxhall Railway Station.
