Part of the London Borough of Islington, Pentonville sits just at the edge of the central London region on the Inner Ring Road, 2.82 km north-northeast of Charing Cross. Originally comprising large swaths of open countryside adjacent to the original New Road, the area eventually became what is still considered the first planned suburb in London, due to the efforts of one Henry Penton towards the end of the 18th century. After World War II, a large part of the area became occupied by council housing, with several blocks later being rebuilt to follow more contemporary designs. Due to its proximity to King’s Cross, Pentonville has access to many of the same amenities enjoyed by its larger neighbour, including its commercial districts and transport stations. The Angel tube station is the area’s closest means of accessing the underground system, while St Pancras International and King’s Cross are the most convenient nearby railway stations.
