Part of the London Borough of Redbridge, Woodford is part of East London that is split into four distinct areas: Woodford Wells, Woodford Green, Woodford Bridge, and South Woodford. The entire region was originally a collection of smaller hamlets rather than a singular settlement, and it wasn’t until the 1400s, when wealthy Londoners started building mansions there, that its population started to grow. The modern suburban image of Woodford first started to take shape after the opening of the Eastern Counties Railway Line and, more specifically, the two nearby stations that came with it. Over the years, many of the mansions previously found in the area were demolished to make way for the development of new housing projects, and the Central line’s extension through Woodford during the 20th century cemented its place as an important hub within the London commuter belt. Currently, the Woodford’s transport needs are served by the Woodford, South Woodford, and Roding Valley tube stations, as well as the multiple Transport for London bus routes passing through the region.
