Hackney Central is considered the main part of the larger Hackney district, which occupies the better part of the modern-day London Borough of Hackney. The locality is mainly centered around Mare Street and the extensive collection of shopping areas to its north. While much of Central Hackney’s housing stock was replaced by more modern residential developments after World War II, several blocks of the more desirable Georgian and Victorian terraced houses still remain. Town Hall Square is regarded as the district’s cultural centre, while the area surrounding its two railway stations is dominated by retail shops, restaurants, and other commercial establishments. To the south, Broadway Market is home to even more shops in addition to its street market. Hackney also benefits from a relative wealth of transport links, with Hackney Downs railway station providing frequent trips to central London, the Hackney Central station serving commuters headed either east or west, and numerous London Bus routes handling shorter trips to the surrounding areas.
