Part of both London’s metropolitan area and the Greater London Urban Area, the town of Buckhurst Hill in the Epping Forest district of Essex lies directly north of the London Borough of Redbridge and its town centre sits roughly 16 km north-east of Charing Cross. Development of the surrounding area started in earnest following the opening of Buckhurst Hill station, which eventually became part of Eastern Counties Railway line, in the late 1850s. While expansion into Epping Forest was eventually discontinued, several residential areas in modern-day Buckhurst Hill still technically encroach upon the forest’s natural boundaries. Despite the town’s relatively small area, it still features a wide selection of dining establishments and pubs. Shopping needs are similarly well-addressed by several parades of shops and the main retail hub that is Queens Road. In addition to its own tube station, Buckhurst Hill’s transport options also include nearby Roding Hill station and a number of London Bus routes.
