The Royal Victoria Dock is the largest of three docks in Newham that make up the Royal Group of Docks and was among the last areas of London’s Docklands to be targeted by major redevelopment efforts following their closure to commercial traffic in the second half of the 20th century. As a result, the area has been built up with more modern housing properties and commercial spaces than the other former docks and became an extremely desirable neighbourhood for the commuter population of London’s main business districts after DLR’s extension in the 1990s. Adding to its appeal to young professionals are the numerous pubs, bars, and restaurants in the area, while the selection of retail shops and supermarkets of all sizes afford its residents a wide range of options when it comes to their everyday shopping needs. Like the rest of the Royal Docks area, Victoria Dock has become one of London’s busiest neighbourhoods due to its proximity to the London City Airport, with the ExCel Exhibition Centre and the many hotels in the area drawing a large number of visitors each year.
