Wapping is one of the districts along the Thames within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the east London region. While most of the district fell into a state of decline following the docks’ closure after the war, it became the subject of large-scale redevelopment efforts late in the 20th century through the efforts of the London Docklands Development Corporation and is now home to a variety of modern residential, commercial, and light industrial properties. Partly as a result of Wapping’s strong maritime heritage, the district has also become known for its waterfront pubs, several of which are among the longest standing establishments in the area. Tobacco Dock, formerly a disused Grade I listed warehouse-turned-shopping centre, is also in Wapping and was completely made over as a massive events and conferencing facility early in the 21st century. Wapping railway station is the district’s most used transport link, but there are several London routes operating in the area as well as Shadwell DLR station to the north.
