Shacklewell is a locality in the London Borough of Hackney that developed around what was originally a hamlet on Shacklewell Lane. The settlement stood alongside the neighbouring villages of Dalston, Kingsland, and Newington and eventually became one of the region’s housing districts. For a brief period of time in the late 19th century, it was also a minor industrial centre, but thereafter returned to being predominantly residential. Much of its modern-day appeal is derived from the low-cost housing options available in the area and its proximity to Dalson, Hackney, and Stoke Newington and consequently, their bustling commercial centres. While there are some who would consider Shacklewell’s distinct lack of its own railway or tube station a deterrent, the nearby railway stations (Dalston Kingsland, Hackney Downs, and Rectory Road) and the numerous Transport for London bus routes serving the surrounding areas nevertheless make it a desirable district for the average London commuter.
