Residents can find advice on how to reduce and reuse waste on the council website, and Croydon council provide a very useful and informative video, explaining exactly how waste is handled and recovered at waste treatment facilities from within the borough and on a national scale. All the waste that is collected in the borough goes on a reprocessing journey. Food waste goes to an anaerobic digestion facility, where gas and bio fertilizer are produced. The biogas is used as fuel and for generating electricity, and the fertilizer is pasteurised to remove pathogens before being applied to the soil. Paper and card get sent to paper mills throughout the UK, where the materials are washed and liquified before being reprocessed into recycled paper products. Glass tins and plastic go into the mixed recycling bin and taken to a materials recovery facility where they are sorted and sold on to reprocessors, and there is a facility in Dagenham where some of the plastic gets processed into pellets which can be used to manufacture any number of plastic based products and materials.

Together they implement cost effective waste management strategies, and provide news and information on how the South London Waste Partnership is working towards sustainable environmentally friendly solutions. Croydon council ensures that even non recyclable waste can be kept out of landfill by sending materials such as Polystyrene, bubble wrap, and some food containers to an energy recovery facility in Beddington less than four miles from the town centre. The waste materials are burnt at temperatures that can exceed 850 degrees celsius, producing large amounts of steam used to generate electricity and ash, which can be used in road building. Viridor, who manage large scale waste treatment projects, have taken over what was once the landfill site at Beddington and transformed it into natural wetlands and grasslands in collaboration with the South London Waste Partnership. Croydon’s own environmental policy, The Green Commitment which was established over 20 years ago, sets out five key aims to improve the environment including a commitment to sustainability and protecting and improving natural surroundings within the borough.
