Learn more about Waste Disposal in East London
The East London Waste Authority (ELWA) owns and operates four recycling centres in East London that provide a disposal service for the people living within East London boroughs. The ELWA recycling centres are Frizland’s Lane RRC in Barking and Dagenham, Gerpin’s Lane RRC in Havering, Chigwell Road RRC in Redbridge and Jenkins Lane RRC in Newham. These recycling centres take household, electronic and even small amounts of hazardous waste. The services at these recycling centres are free for residents to use, and commercial waste can be disposed of at Frizland’s lane RRC and Jenkins Lane RRC as a paid for service.
Over two million people live in East London, and last year the area produced over 906,000 tonnes of waste. East London’s councils achieved a recycling rate of close to 50%, which is above the national average; however, the East London borough councils are eager to increase this figure. With many of the independent businesses in commercial areas of East London making plans to go ‘zero waste’ soon, East London could help lead the way to reduce landfill waste in the city.
