The South West does have one of the larger populations in London, just under 2 million and with nearly 700,000 residential buildings, waste collection and disposal could be harder to regulate. 733,000 tonnes of waste are collected by the council every year in South West London and therefore it is important that this low rate of recycling is improved. In Merton, there is a recycling and reuse centre on Garth Road which is a council run facility. This site requires booking a slot on weekdays before you arrive to dispose of your waste, however, this is not required on weekends. The Lambeth reuse and recycling centre will accept a number of materials for reuse. This centre is only open to residents and you must provide a proof of ID and proof of address on arrival. The site does not accept items for disposal and is purely for recycling. Lambeth council recommends its residents visit the Wandsworth household waste and recycling centre on Smugglers Way if they have any items that they wish to be disposed of.

There are several private waste companies that cover this area, however, they can sometimes be limited in their services and searching for a reputable company can be time consuming. The council also encourages that any sort of bulky waste, such as furniture in a good condition, should be donated to local charities. If you have lots of bulky waste, Lambeth Council also offers a property clearance service, but this can take up to 4 weeks to arrange.

The Garth Road recycling and reuse centre does not accept clinical or hazardous waste. They do accept up to six bags or sheets of asbestos as long as you call ahead and securely wrap the material with tape. For other hazardous materials they recommend you request a collection from the City of London’s council-run hazardous waste collection service, however, the types of hazardous material that they collect is very limited. The City of London council collects certain paints and chemicals and asbestos but only if it is in a residential building, they do not collect asbestos from commercial buildings or schools.

Merton does provide battery recycling points around the borough and Lambeth council allows the disposal of lead acid batteries at their reuse and recycle centre.

Both Merton and Lambeth councils do not offer shredding services or hard drive wiping services. The recycling centres in these boroughs do offer a disposal service for paper, however, it is unclear whether this is a secure service for documents or whether it is for all types of paper.
